BACKGROUND

The late 1960’s brought a change into the lives of people with Intellectual Disabilities. Instead of living far from their homes and communities, they were offered opportunities to live lives that were more like the lives of people without disabilities.

That is, people with ID are now offered more normal routines of life that include engaging with people in their own neighborhood or community; with people they know or would like to know. Now, people are offered routines of daily life that are based on their individual preferences and skills, in places that bring them happiness and self-satisfaction.

Out & About is a group of people who ascribe to these principles of individual choice and Everyday Lives. We support the people while they explore their preferred activities in their own communities and assist them with learning new things to do and meeting new people. Out & About is a way for people with ID to become part of the fabric of the communities in which they live.
